Tips for Summertime BBQ’s
Summertime means BBQ’s out the wazoo. Several clients tell me, “Well, I have a party this weekend so it probably won’t be a great check in next week”. Don’t make excuses; find a solution!
If you’re anything like me, you LOVE summertime parties. We’re usually in bathing suits, eating, drinking, and having a great time. I have two very easy solutions for you to help hit your macros when attending a BBQ.
If you’re hosting the BBQ or going to a very close friend’s house, BRING YOUR OWN FOOD. Yes, it’s that simple. You can make healthy, macro friendly BBQ, potatoes, corn, salads, etc. You can even make it look just like the food every one else is eating so that no one has to ask what you’re eating. Have you ever heard of proper preparation prevents poor performance? This is key in macro tracking.
Another tip for BBQ tracking is pick foods with the least amount of ingredients. A burger is easy to enter into your app – it is just meat. Don’t have a scale in your pocket? Good, that would be weird. 3.5oz of meat is about the size of your palm and about as thick as a deck of cards. Take a good look at that burger and estimate how big you think it is. Putting it on a bun? Great, I like Martin’s potato rolls and I know how big they are so just compare the bun on your plate to a bun you have eaten time and time again.
What about that table full of deliciousness?? Well, let’s just skip the desserts because they usually have you coming back for more and we don’t want that. The other savory treats, like potato and pasta salad, are super hard to track. Stick to the basics. Single ingredient foods are easiest to track. Load up on the veggie tray, green salad, corn on the cob, etc. That is easy to measure.
Lastly, don’t go hungry. If you go to a party and you’re starving, you will make bad decisions. Be sure to have a healthy snack or small meal before you go. It will prevent you from over eating and making poor decisions.
